NES Summer Reading Challenge Update…

Dear NES Students,

We are in need of your help in order to reach our goal for the Summer Reading Challenge.

Currently NES has read a total of 1,168,886 minutes. If you remember from our Summer Reading Challenge Kick-Off in May, I promised the following….

* If NES students read 1 million minutes, I will…wear the Allentown High School Red Bird Mascot Costume
* If NES students read 2 million minutes, I will…give an extra recess and water ice for all NES students
* If NES students read 2.5 million minutes, I will host a game show with slime and pie in your eye

So, get going NES students! Keep reading and make sure you are logging your minutes!! I would love to be able to grant an extra recess and shower you with water ice on a warm September day!!
Enjoy the rest of the summer!

NES 4th Grade Farewell/Step-Up Day

June 13, 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians of Fourth Grade Students,

I am pleased to inform you that today we held a Fourth Grade Farewell/Step-Up Assembly and Middle School Orientation at Stone Bridge Middle School. The assembly honored our fourth grade students by reflecting on their elementary school experience and providing a chance for the students to look to their future at Stone Bridge Middle School. The students were given special certificates of recognition to mark the end of their elementary experience at Newell. Ms. Negro, Middle School Principal, introduced herself and shared a few highlights the students can look forward to next year at Stone Bridge Middle School. Lastly, our fourth graders were given a tour of the building by current students of the middle school.

We designed this informal student program as a transition activity for our fourth graders to help prepare them for their new grade and new school next year. On August 22nd, Stone Bridge Middle School will host an Open House for parents and students to tour the building and meet some of the terrific staff at Stone Bridge Middle School. Please refer to the Stone Bridge Middle School letter that was distributed to your child today.

It has been an absolute pleasure educating your children and working with you as partners during this exciting journey.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Huggins
Principal

NES–4th Grade Redbird Walk Down Memory Lane…

June 2, 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians of 4th Grade Students,

Earlier today, I invited each of our 4th grade students to a very special event–4th Grade Redbird Walk Down Memory Lane. This will be a time where all of NES students and staff will line the halls and wait for our 4th grade students to parade through the school. As our 4th grade students walk the halls, they will be hearing claps, cheers and statements of praise for all of their accomplishments while here at NES. This is our special way to share with our 4th grade students how proud we are and how excited we are for the next “piece” of their puzzle. I also wanted to extend the invitation to our 4th grade parents to join in the fun by asking you to line the blacktop area by our playground at 3:00PM to clap and cheer on our children! Details about our 4th Grade Redbird Walk Down Memory Lane are noted below.

If you plan on attending this event, please complete the bottom portion of this letter and return to your child’s teacher by Wednesday, June 7th.
Sincerely,
Kelly. Huggins
Principal

Date: Thursday, June 15th
Time: 3:00 PM NES 4th Grade Students to Begin Walk
Location: NES Halls & Playground Area
End Time: 3:20 PM NES Gymnasium

**Weather–if it is raining, we will still hold our event. The only change will be parent location. If it is raining, we will ask parents to report to the gym doors by cottages where you will be invited into the gymnasium to line up along the walls of our gymnasium while our 4th grade students parade around the gym to hear you clap and cheer on your children.

NES Support Worker of the Year…Mrs. Koontz

Happy Friday Newell Elementary School Family!

I am pleased to share that Mrs. Cindy Koontz has been selected as Newell Elementary School Support Worker of the Year!

Mrs. Koontz has spent the past 15 years supporting the students of NES in and out of the classroom. She meets each day and student as a NEW Day, one where we start over with a fresh start. Mrs. Koontz is patient, hard-working and very giving of her time. We are so very fortunate to have Mrs. Koontz on our team!

Newell Elementary School Teacher of the Year–Mrs. Kim DeRisi

Dear Newell Elementary School Family,

It is my pleasure to share that Mrs. Kim DeRisi has been selected as Newell Elementary School Teacher of the Year!

Over the past few years, Mrs. DeRisi has transformed our elementary school halls into works of art. Her creative flare, passion for her craft and love for our children truly shine through and through each and every day. Her daily interactions with staff, students and parents reflect the person of character that she models, regardless of the situation. Mrs. DeRisi’s approach to promoting a curriculum with coherence and establishing a culture for learning are evident in the many projects that the students of Newell have experienced in her art classes.

Newell Elementary School is a better place because of Mrs. DeRisi and we are so honored to have her on our team!!

CONGRATULATIONS MRS. DERISI!

PARCC ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

Dear NES Parents/Guardians of 3rd and 4th Grade Students,

We want to make you aware of some important information regarding the PARCC Assessments coming up next month.

Our third and fourth grade students are in the process of previewing the PARCC test format and practicing taking both the PARCC Language Arts (ELA) and Math assessments. If you’d like to explore the PARCC test samples and resources, please take time to visit the PARCC website- http://www.parcconline.org/resources/parent-resources. This would also be a great opportunity to encourage your child to do his/her best, discuss the importance of a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast each day to prepare students for a productive morning of testing. Please also ensure they come to school with a nourishing snack and their favorite books to read if they finish early.

REMINDER: Our 3rd and 4th grade students will begin testing on Monday, April 24th and complete testing on Tuesday, May 3rd. Due to Bring Your Child to Work Day on April 27th, we will not be PARCC testing on that date. Each grade will participate in four days of Math testing and three days of Language Arts(ELA) assessments. Each day of PARCC testing will begin in the morning and conclude before 3rd and 4th grade lunches. Please note that it is important for students to arrive on time in order to be present for the first testing section of each day. Make-ups for both grades will take place May 4th- May 19th. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the administration of the PARCC Assessments.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
