NES Celebrates Random Acts of Kindness Week & Read Across America Week

February 2018
Dear Newell Families,

February is Random Acts of Kindness Month. During the week of February 20th-23rd we will be helping our neighbors in our local communities by conducting a Toiletry and Personal Hygiene Drive for the Cream Ridge Food Pantry as well as the Allentown Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry.

If you are able, please donate an item or two from your child’s grade level listed below. Please send these supplies to school with your child OR drop them off in the breezeway by Newell’s Main Office during Parent-Teacher conferences on February 21st and 22nd.

Collection Dates:
FEBRUARY 20, 21, 22 & 23

PRE-K: baby wipes, diapers

Kindergarten: toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss

1st Grade: soap (pumps and bars of soap)

2nd Grade: shampoo (for adults and children)

3rd Grade: deodorant, body/hand lotion

4th Grade: toilet paper, tissues

READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK…February 26-March 2nd
Read Across America Day 2018 is Friday, March 2nd and we have a lot of activities planned for the week/day of!!!!!

Our illustrious Cat in the Hat will be making his rounds on Friday, March 2 to classrooms for special read alouds as well as surprise visits!

We will also have our special week dress-up days. Many thanks to Ms. Blum for coming up with the following ideas:

Finally, author Audrey Vernick will be visiting Prek through 4th grade classes. Ms. Vernick has written many interesting fiction books in which she uses humor to discuss the challenges children face. Her nonfiction books are equally interesting as she writes about successes in sports. Please click on link to learn more about Ms. Vernick. During her visit, Ms. Vernick will discuss the writing process with suggestions to help students as they pursue their own writing projects.

Upper Freehold Regional School District
The Selection Process

Candidates for the Upper Freehold Regional School District’s Teacher of the Year Recognition Award Program will be identified from among teachers nominated according to the process noted below. Nominations may be submitted to the appropriate administrators from Tuesday, February 6th, to Thursday, February 22nd. One recipient will be identified at each school to receive this award. The nomination process is as follows:

1. Candidates may be nominated in one of the following ways:
Self Nomination
Nomination by a colleague
Nomination by a parent, student, or community member
2. Letters of nomination should be sent to the appropriate building administrator.

Notification and Selection
Teachers will be notified that they have been nominated on Friday, February 23rd.
Meeting with building T.O.Y. Selection Committee, Monday, February 26th
Nominees will be invited to complete a Professional Summary Sheet and each candidate will be invited to have a conversation with their School Selection Committee.
Each candidate may bring any materials to the Selection Committee Meeting that would help the committee better understand the work of the candidate as it relates to how the candidate has:
Connected people to create community
Contributed to promoting a curriculum with coherence
Contributed to establishing a climate for learning
Contributed to the development of character

C. The selected representative for each school will be announced on Wednesday, February 28th.
