Several times throughout the school year students are selected to experience what it is like to be the Principal of Newell Elementary School. This experience is granted through fundraising opportunities such as the PTA Walk-a-Thon, Upper Freehold Regional Education Foundation Game Night and other fundraising dinners.
One of our 3rd grade students, Miss Delaney Nolan was fortunate enough to have her name drawn at one of these fundraising events. Today, Principal Nolan spent the day with me greeting students, solving unexpected problems, determining indoor or outdoor recess, visiting classrooms, meeting with teachers and making special announcements. We are having a wonderful time and Principal Nolan would like me to share with you that being a principal of an elementary school is “a lot of work and also a lot of fun!”
Enjoy some photos from our day!
The halls of NES are filled with important messages about taking care of our Earth and show signs that Spring is in the air. A special thank you to the teachers who took time to display student work. The work truly brightens are day! Tonight, NES will host our Earth Day Event beginning at 5PM in the auditorium with a viewing of the movie, The Lorax and the festivities continue with special Earth Day activities set up in our cafeteria for the students to enjoy. Mr. Sulyok’s music classes (1 – 4) performed on the xylophones and metallophones for their teachers at the end of each class last week. It was music to our ears! Below is a picture of Mr. Wiederspan’s 3rd grade class. Great job!
Mrs. Kern, Math Specialist thought it was important to highlight the efforts of our 1st and 2nd grade students with learning their math addition facts, so she created a hall bulletin board covered in stars and lights! Yes, you guessed it, it’s the FACT WALL OF FAME and students have been working hard to show what they know when it comes to their math addition facts! Our goal is to have all of our 1st and 2nd grade student’s names on stars and in lights by the end of the school year. Keep it up 1st and 2nd graders! Woohoo!

PARCC ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Dear NES Parents/Guardians of 3rd and 4th Grade Students,
We want to make you aware of some important information regarding the PARCC Assessments coming up next month.
Our third and fourth grade students have had time to preview the test format and practice taking both the PARCC Language Arts (ELA) and Math assessments. If you’d like to explore the PARCC test samples and resources, please take time to visit the PARCC website- http://www.parcconline.org/resources/parent-resources. This would also be a great opportunity to encourage your child to do his/her best, discuss the importance of a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast each day to prepare students for a productive morning of testing. Please also ensure they come to school with a nourishing snack and their favorite books to read if they finish early.
REMINDER: Our 3rd and 4th grade students will begin testing on Monday, April 11th and complete testing on Wednesday, April 20th. Each grade will participate in four days of Math testing and three days of Language Arts(ELA) assessments. Each day of PARCC testing will begin in the morning and conclude before 3rd and 4th grade lunches. Please note that it is important for students to arrive on time in order to be present for the first testing section of each day. Make-ups for both grades will take place April 21st- May 19th. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the administration of the PARCC Assessments.
As always, thank you for your continued support.
Our third and fourth grade computer students are using an online program to help them hone their typing skills. TypingClub lets them practice their skills at home while participating in the Typing Challenge at school. On weekends and during school vacations, classes try to do the most typing in order to with the Typing Challenge for that period.
Our third and fourth grade students also participated in The Arcademics Cup, a nationwide multiplication games challenge. Newell students played against other students nationwide and, for a few hours, were in third place for most games played.
