As part of our celebration of Black History Month, the students of Newell Elementary School have been learning about the art work of Faith Ringgold and Romare Bearden. Faith Ringgold is a renowned African American painter, writer, speaker, mixed media sculptor and is most famous for her storybook painting quilts. Two of her pieces are pictured below, The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles and Tar Beach. In the Sunflower piece, you will see 8 influential African American women from past and present who paved the way and made a difference in the world. Pictured are (from upper left) Madam Walker, Sojourner Truth, Ida Wells, Fannie Lou Hammer, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Ella Baker.
Romare Bearden was an American artist who depicted African-American life. Pictured below are 2 pieces, The Piano Lesson/Homage and Morning. The Piano Lesson is most famous for the use of patterns and interior space, while Morning is depicting a memory of African American family life.
The art work of both Faith Ringgold and Romare Bearden truly brightens the halls of NES and captures important pieces of history while highlighting the diversity in our artists and nation. This is just one area where the students of NES are learning and celebrating the achievements and contributions of African Americans.

With the help of our Physical Education Specialist, Ms. Katie Schuh and Mr. Matt Nemeth our 3rd grade students have been perfecting their dance moves. Students recently participated in a unit of music and movement and learned basic dance moves and how these moves can also raise your heart rate. All in a day’s work!
Enjoy the photos!
Congratulations to Miss Sofia Utset who did an outstanding job sharing all of the fun happenings at NES. Sofia presented tonight at our monthly Board of Education meeting and highlighted past student events as well as informed the Board of our upcoming events. She noted our Noetic Math Challenge that our students recently participated in and she reminded everyone to come out this Friday night for NES Bingo Night.
Great jog Sofia!
This week our 3rd and 4th Grade Mindful Missions students presented their projects to a group of parents, family and NES staff. I had the pleasure of attending and learned some very interested facts about US History and Natural Disasters.
The students did an outstanding job with organizing their research, creating engaging displays to represent their research and reporting out on their topic. Fantastic job! A special thank you to Ms. Schumacher who oversaw the work on their projects. And, thank you to all who came out for the presentations. Your support means the world to your children and the school!
