Ava S. in Mrs. Nielsen’s kindergarten class was 1 of 12 artists chosen by Artsonia to be “Artist of the Week” in the Pre-K through 3rd grade category. She received 860 votes and won the contest! We honored Ava yesterday by announcing her name and award to the entire school. Ava received a $50 gift card to Blick Art Supplies and Mrs. DiRisi received a gift card to Blick to purchase art supplies for our art classroom.
Congratulations to our top readers who were honored this week by NES and Scholastic Book Organization. These students contributed to NES reading a total of 3,106, 854 minutes from May 2014 until September 2014. Our original reading goal was 2, 000,000 minutes of reading. Wow–impressive! NES is ranked number 1 in NJ and 15th in the world for our number of minutes read. I am so very proud of all of our students!
Partner Up for the PARCC: Preparing Our Learners for Success in School and Beyond
The PARCC, or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, is a standardized evaluation that will be administered to students in third through twelfth grades during the spring of 2015. As schools across the country implement rigorous educational and assessment standards aimed at preparing all students for success in college, workplace and life, the faculty of Newell Elementary School recognizes that “it takes a village to raise a learner”. We invited you to join us for our first Partner Up Learning Adventure. The goal of this parent-teacher collaboration is to:
- Review our school’s current levels of performance on standardized and benchmark assessments
- Create an opportunity for parents and teachers to engage in active conversation and collaboration in the areas of literacy, mathematics and technology
- To provide members of our school-home community with “take-home” resources, websites, and strategies that foster continued success for all students
