September/October 2014–Welcome Back & Looking Ahead…

Newell Elementary School opened its doors on Thursday, September 4th to 530 eager students, wearing their best smiles! It was obvious that they were ready to get started. Students and teachers hit the ground running and began the school year by getting acquainted, establishing class rules and setting learning goals.

September was a busy month for the students and staff of NES. We held our Welcome Back Student Assembly on Friday, September 12th. The purpose of the student assembly was to review and model for students how to go about various procedural routines such as, morning line-up, entering the school, using the bathroom, playing at recess, security drills, and how to keep everyone safe. In addition, NES students took the Stand United Against Bullying Pledge. On Friday, September 19th we held our Summer Reading Challenge Celebration. NES students read 3,106,854 minutes of reading. We placed 1st in NJ, 15th in the WORLD—WOW! The celebration gathering was filled with student events and principal events that brought smiles to everyone’s face! Lastly, we held our annual Back-to-School parent evening on Tuesday, September 23rd. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend our Back-to-School night. We certainly appreciate your support in this very important educational journey!

Looking ahead to October…our students enjoyed their time participating in the PTA Walk-a-Thon held on Friday, October 3rd. Thank you PTA! School will be closed on Monday, October 13th honoring Columbus Day. There is a PTA meeting on Tuesday, October 14th at 7PM at SBMS. On Thursday, October 16th NES will hold its first ever Hallo-Boo Math Event in the cafeteria from 6-8PM. Please be sure to check out NES Virtual Backpack for detailed information. PTA Halloween Fest is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29th at West Haven Farm. And, there will be information shortly regarding our NES Halloween Parade for our Prek-2 grade students.

Please be sure to check the NES Virtual Backpack every Tuesday and Friday for updated school information. In addition, please take time to print the items from the Virtual Backpack that require your signature and return to your child’s teacher.

The recent changes that were made to our Morning Arrival—Parent Drop-Off Location has helped to alleviate the increased traffic flow that we were encountering. Thank you for your flexibility and patience while we worked to improve our procedures. And, thank you for adjusting your schedules to arrive a few minutes earlier in order to avoid the overflow of parents arriving after 8:55AM.

Thank you for a wonderful start to the 2014-2015 school year and I look forward to working with you throughout the school year to provide the students of NES with the best educational experiences possible!
