The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

IMG_0883 (640x480) Thank you to all who attended the last Book Club meeting. The selection, “...Lemon Cake,” by Aimee Bender, received mixed reviews from attendees.  Comments ranged from “Liked it,” and “Weird,” to “Where’s the quotation marks?’ and “What’s up with the chair?” I anticipated a rather divided discussion, so I reached out to Ms. Bender, who graciously explained the lack of quotation marks: “I had liked how it looked in other books I’d read, and so it’s more visual than anything. But it also makes her (Rose’s) thinking and speaking less sharply defined which I didn’t mind either.” Makes sense when you’ve read the book.

Additionally, Ms. Bender also provided a link to an interview that explains the burden of sensitivities that plague her characters. Thank you, Aimee Bender, for enlightening us and creating prose that engaged us in great conversation!
