NES Halloween Parent Letter

                      Newell Elementary School

                                                                                                     October 24, 2012

Dear Parents,

On Wednesday, October 31, 2012 Newell Elementary School will hold various festivities in celebration of Halloween. Please read this notice carefully, as some grades will be participating in a parade and class party, while other grade levels will be participating in a class party only. Also included in this letter are guidelines to use/follow when putting together your child's costume.   Please note that we will be collecting non-perishable food donations for our local food pantry which is in great need.  If parents plan to attend the parade, please bring along a can of food to place in boxes that will be located outside the front of the school.   Lastly, please review the guidelines in our Managing Life-Threatening Food Allergies Policy, which encourages parents to refrain from sending in any form of peanut product for snack, lunch and special class parties/activities. This policy can be found on our school website.  Please keep in mind that we want this day to be enjoyable and safe for everyone.

Schedule of Events/Festivities

Halloween Parade/Classroom Party--For PreK, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade Students

Pre-K , Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will be participating in our Halloween Parade - Start Time 9:45 A.M

We are asking parents to abide by the schedule below in order to view the student parade. Please also take time to review the parade route below.  Please remember that videos and pictures can only be used for home viewing purposes and may not be placed on the internet for any reason.  Following the parade, grade levels will begin to have their class parties. For safety reasons, only parent volunteers who have been notified by the classroom teacher as assisting with the class party on that day will be the only adults permitted in the building. All Parent Volunteers must report to the Main Office to sign in and receive a  party pass. Please remember that all class parties are limited to parent volunteers only and we ask that siblings not attend.

Pre-K  PM and  Kindergarten PM  Parade - Start Time 12:50 P.M.

The children will follow the parade route noted below.

Parade Route - Playground Blacktop Area

We will use the playground blacktop area for our students to safely parade around the entire square of blacktop.

We ask parents to stand in our playground field only.  Please do not stand along the sidewalk and/or the blacktop as these two areas need to be clear and visible for our students to safely move about.  Our parade will begin with our 2nd grade students leading the way and ending with our Pre-K classes.

****Parade will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

Classroom Party--For 3rd and 4th Grade

3rd and 4th grade will be participating in classroom parties at various times throughout the day. For safety reasons, only parent volunteers who have been notified by the classroom teacher as assisting with the class party on that day will be the only adults permitted in the building. All Parent Volunteers must report to the Main Office to sign in and receive a "Volunteer" pass. Please remember that all class parties are limited to parent volunteers only and ask that siblings not attend.

Halloween Costume Guidelines

We ask for your cooperation regarding the following costume guidelines that will be worn on Wednesday, October 31st.

1.     Avoid violent or bloody images. It is okay to look "scary," but there is a difference between frightening and gruesome.

2.     Eye and face masks are acceptable (make sure that vision is not impaired). Makeup should be minimal and applied at home.

3.     Please make sure that your child's costume has nothing hanging below the wrist or ankle. Tripping and/or getting materials caught is a major concern.

4.     Please send costume props, all accessories, and cape-like parts to a costume in a bag labeled with your child's name. Props (if any) must be manageable, particularly if students ride a bus.

5.     Weapons of any kind are not permitted.

6.     Remember that students scheduled for Physical Education on the 31st will still have class. Costumes for those students, therefore, should be selected with safety and maneuverability in mind.

NES Celebrates Red Ribbon/Peace Week

Red Ribbon/Peace Week

At the end of October each year (October 22-26 this year), we celebrate Red Ribbon Week to teach children the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle, free of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs..  Students are encouraged to wear the red ribbon during the week.  In addition, we would like to ask students to show their enthusiasm by participating in the following:

(Wear sweat pants and sweat shirts.)

Tuesday (Oct. 23):  "Sock it to Drugs Day"

(Wear goofy or mis-matched socks!)

Important Reminder Regarding PTA Walk-a-Thon

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The PTA will be hosting our annual Walk-a-Thon Friday, October 12th. As you know, the PTA has decreased the number of fundraisers the elementary school hosts in an effort to focus on one or two significant events. The Walk-a-Thon is considered to be a significant fundraising event for the elementary school.  It is important to note that the funds raised during the Walk-a-Thon will go directly towards funding the many assembly programs and our Meet the Artist and Meet the Author programs. These school-wide assembly programs and artist/author groups connect directly with the elementary school curriculum and enhance the children's educational experiences. In addition, 10% of the fundraising proceeds will be donated to the local food pantry to help replenish their food supplies for the holiday season.

Please take the time to review the PTA handout highlighting the Walk-a-Thon. Please be sure to fill out the medical release portion of the form which is located at the bottom of the second page. In addition, volunteers are still needed. If you would like to volunteer your time or if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Terry Veiga at rescuepupsmf@yahoo.com or call (609)208-0138.

Lastly, listed below is a tentative schedule for each grade level and the time they will be walking. If you would like to stop by, please first report to the Main Office to obtain a Visitor's Pass.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the PTA and of our school!
