An NSF-Funded Teacher Enhancement Program developing master teachers in astronomy content, pedagogy and leadership, and offering a firsthand experience to extend the process of scientific research to the classroom. As an extension and continuation of the training received as part of the RBSE program, a team of nine RBSE alumni met in Tucson at the offices of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory to learn how best to bring good science to the classrooms of their colleagues. In an effort to make science teaching more exciting, to increase the success of new teachers to the profession and to keep experienced teachers happily in the classrooms where they belong, the inaugural class of Teacher Leaders in Research Based Science Education met to learn more about the profession they proudly represent. Members of TLRBSE will take the skills they have learned and the materials and programs developed for them by the dedicated staff at NOAO to their designated second tier teachers in an effort to increase the awareness and use of inquiry based science education in the classrooms of their colleagues. |
