Tips & Suggestions for Parents Become educated about drugs - Learning the facts, their names, effects and appearances. Be a credible source of information to your children so they will come to you and not go to others for the facts about drugs. Share information on drugs, and talk with your family, relatives, friends, and neighbors about drug-prevention programs. Communicate with your children, and strive to improve the quality and quantity of time you spend with them. Listen to your children. Let your children know of your "No Drug" stand, and that drugs will not be tolerated in your family, home, or neighborhood. Build your children's strengths. Encourage them and help develop their talents. Urge them to participate in healthy and creative activities in both school and community. Help your children develop a strong system of values. This will help them make positive decisions, and stand up to peer influence. Be consistent. Spouses and guardians should reach an agreement as to how they will handle the issue of drug use in their family. Establish rules and consquences with your children. Be prepared to enforce those rules. Establish communication with other parents and teachers who interact with your children. Contact your child's school. Talk to Mr. Rick Rivera, the Students Assistance Coordinator to find out what is being done in drug prevention education. Also learn what other measures are being taken to discourage drug use. Be a good example and role model. Examine your own habits and behavior to assure your child observes what he or she is being taught. | |||||
