Planning a Garden

Plan your garden with the following ideas in mind:

  1. You should plan for a garden that is 9 feet wide by 14 feet long. New Jersey is in planting zone 5.
  2. Plan for early and late spring flowering bulbs only. Do not plan for summer blooming flowers like lilies, gladiolas and dahlias.
  3. You will receive a piece of planning paper with squares. Each square on the paper represents a square foot in the garden.
  4. Include a plant list of flowers you would like to use. This should include the number and color of each bulb.
  5. Use the color wheel and read about complementary and contrasting colors before you put together your garden plan. Learn about colors at this website.
  6. Include the dates you expect the bulbs to sprout and the dates you expect the flowers to bloom.
  7. Know how much room each bulb needs to grow and remain healthy. How deeply should it be planted?
  8. Include on the plan where the classroom windows and the door into the garden area are located. How will your garden look to people seeing it from these directions?
  9. Think about the height of your flowers. Don't put something really, really tall in front of many short plants.
  10. You can include green foliage plants like hostas in your design. These will grow in and hide the dying flowers of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils after their blooming seasons are over.
